Have you been around long enough  to remember the 'MOONBEAM' Hot Tub Heater?

Introduced in the late 1970's, the 'Moonbeam' was manufactured by the 'Indian Spa Manufacturing Company' and was the brainstorm of Doug Scher, one of Indian's founders.

The 'Moonbeam' was a gas fueled Wood Hot Tub heater which required no pumps to operate and worked off the simple principle that heat rises. Hot Tub users could enjoy their hot tub experience without the intrusion of pump motors.

3/4" pipes were installed through the side of the wood tub and as the cooler water below was heated by a burner in the Moonbeam, the warmer water would flow through the top of the heater back into the tub by means of convection.

To control the temperature in the tub a thermostat probe was installed through the wall of the tub and fastened to the inside wall. The thermostat itself was actually designed and incorporated within the gas valve itself. The gas valve was located on the front of the heater. Gas consumption was so low on the Moonbeam that in most cases one needed to simply tap into the nearest gas line instead of running a gas line all the way to the meter.

Wood tubs utilizing a Moonbeam were accompanied by a separate pump, filter and timer which were independent of the Moonbeam heater. The filtration system kept the hot tub filtered while the Moonbeam kept the tub ready for use without the pump running. Ah, what a joy, soaking in silence.
